Ashbrook Open 18th-25th July 2020

Our ASHBROOK OPEN 2020 has been given the green light to take place from July 18th to 25th.

Given the times as they are, competitive tennis is scarce and we are very fortunate to be able to run this event this year, thanks in no small way to our Open Director Cathie Hannin whose expertise and guidance is invaluable. We also appreciate just how much work and responsibility is involved in making this happen this year.

Over the years the people involved in running our Open have succeeded in establishing it as the best, friendliest little open in Dublin. In recent years we have worked hard to keep the best and friendliest attributes but as entries approached 400 last year we lost our ‘little attribute !

Although there is a small band of people who make up the ‘Open Committee’, we just guide the Ashbrook Open and a tribe of volunteers from within the club make it happen. This year more than ever this ‘tribe’ will be more important as we must obviously adhere to all regulations / guidelines in place. You will be getting (several) further emails to recruit you to this tribe….. in the meantime some tennis details to encourage you to sign up to play :

Ashbrook Open 2020 offers tennis at three levels – Class 2 and Below, Class 4 and Below, and Class 5 and Below.
The ‘Class’ in these headings relates to Dublin Lawn Tennis Council leagues that people may or may not have played in.
If you have never played league tennis, Class 6 and Below are the competitions for you !
In each of these 3 sections we will have Ladies Singles, Gents Singles, Ladies Doubles, Gents Doubles, Mixed Doubles
You may enter any 2 events – if entering a doubles event. make sure you have a partner organised and that they also enter
Entry must be online and is accessible from https://ti.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/tournament?id=7D2F14F0-2549-4E25-B1F1-EAA84C60268C
Payment must be made online
Please read all rules and regulations carefully as they include all the details you need – but if you do have any further queries, please don’t hesitate in replying to this email address
Due to restrictions in place we must limit our overall entry in the Open and the entry in specific events – this will be done on a first come first served basis.

Above all the Ashbrook Open has always been a fun, competitive event and we plan to make it so again this year, but to do this we need your support on and off the court !
Our motto has long been BE SOUND and this year we are expanding it to BE SOUND & BE SAFE !
Regards
Ashbrook Open Team

Floodlit League Successes

Congratulations to the Gents first team who reached the Floodlight Class 3 final and have
been promoted to Class 2.
Also to the Gents third team who have also been promoted.

Ashbrook Win Class 1 Mixed Doubles League!

35 teams entered Class 1 Mixed League … and we won ! Huge clubs had multiple teams in this class…and we won ! Clubs whose membership are multiples of ours took part …and we won!

The 7pm matches saw Ashbrook 1sts take on Swords 1sts. James & Brenda, playing at number two, were done and dusted first – winning with an impressive scoreline of 6-2, 6-2. David & Marian won the first set in a nerve wracking (and that was just for spectators) tie-break. Stephen & Martina lost the first set 3-6. The second set went to Swords in the #1 match, whereas at #3, Ashbrook evened things up with a second set win. At this stage, Cathryne Mc Carthy and Augusta Conway were playing a blinder distributing all the ‘nibbles’ to the spectators. On court, David & Marian were going game for game on court number one, whereas Stephen and Martina went into overdrive on court number three – winning their 3rd set 6-1 ! Great scenes of celebration followed

If you took part last year you will recall the phenomenal emails that got everyone through the busy schedule and late nights with their wit and good humour – unfortunately the author of these, and our director for the past couple of years,  Jonathan Downey,  has completed his term (or maybe it was a sentence) as tournament director and has stepped out from behind ‘the table’ and the keyboard…..  Jonathan had been working in tandem with Cathie Hannin for the last few years and we are delighted that she has taken over as director this year.

A few things we have learned over the past years that we will hope to put into action for 2019 :

By agreement with those involved, some competitions may start on Friday evening…
We will again avail of the generosity of our neighbouring clubs,  with the use of their courts….
For reasons of practicality and all of our sanity we may have to restrict the number of entrants in any event…
To leave people with some time to enjoy the BBQ and the atmosphere in our club, championship tie breaks will be used at one set all in the doubles events until the semi finals stages.
And perhaps most importantly :
We really appreciate the good humour, patience and  understanding you have shown when schedules get very busy, matches start late and end even later. We will do our very best to ensure that things run smoothly and we will strive to provide the hospitality & friendliness as well as the high standard of competition that have become the trademarks of the Ashbrook Open !!

You may enter up to 3 events.
You must be 18 in order to enter.
You must be Over 35 in 2019 to enter the Over 35s (clue is in the name).
The Class you play is influenced by your participation in  2019 Summer League and Tennis Ireland Open events.
Entries will be verified to ensure as much as is humanly possible that everyone is entered in the appropriate class.
If you won a singles event in Class 3, 5, or  7 you must enter a singles event in a higher class this year
No winning partnership in any of the doubles events in Classes 3, 5 or 7 may enter together in an attempt to defend their title – they are most welcome to enter with a new partner though !
Full terms and conditions for the Open 2019 can be found at :Regulations

We are delighted to have an ever growing list of Sponsors, which this year is :

  • Premier Suites
  • Lantech
  • Pure Sport
  • The Hopsack

Huge thanks to all of them for their support. It makes a massive diference to us here at Ashbrook.

Looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks.

Regards,

Ashbrook Open Team
